Sports

by "The Old Perfesser"

This is a new adventure for us all, please take my comments
as they are meant, just for yucks.  I will be making comments
throughout the year regarding the greatest rivalry in sports
with some side dishes on the Mets, Phillies and other
teams or individuals as they stand up and make fools of
themselves. Later we will discuss the coming football season
and th e relative greatness of 2 teams possibly looking at a
Superbowl rematch and the ineptitude of the other team
whose highlight at home games is having a NY fireman lead
a high school cheer ...but that's later...for now........

Nov 25, 2009

Hi everybody, I apologize to my faithful reader and Willy but I have been very busy with champagne showers, David Letterman, parades, you know the usual stuff that happens when you win 27 TWENTY SEVEN… 20,7… TWENT-TEE…SEV-VEN… I MEAN THE MOST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HISTORY….            Anyway, I have thoroughly enjoyed the moment and am here to tell you that winning is great.  The enormity of the Yankee domination of baseball is pretty obvious when you consider that only 5 teams have even won 27 World Series games.

Writers for the Boston Globe, The NY Times (who owns both the Globe and a piece of the Sox) and TV geeks who drool about anything to do with the Red Sox, suddenly have baseball beginning in 2004.  Every stat comparing the two teams is from 2004 on, they even go as far as starting at game 4 when they give ARod's stats, disregarding the fact that he destroyed the Twins in the previous series and was on a rampage against the Red Sox for the first 3 games.  I still say the biggest choke that year was not the Ynakees who lost 2 extra inning games of the 4 they dropped but the St. Louis Cardinals who went 0-4 and NEVER HAD A LEAD FOR THE ENTIRE WORLD SERIES.

When you go back into the real history of baseball, which any student of the game will tell you began when Babe Ruth started smashing the ball over the fence back in 1921, the Yankees have won 40 pennants, that’s .455%, not even Ted Williams could hit that and if you include playoff appearances since 1921, they hit a nice round number of 50% with 44 in 88 years.  All of a sudden however, here in 2009, we hear that Yankees “bought” the championship, the highest payroll, a team of mercenaries. In 2007 the Red Sox had the highest payroll in history to win the World Series, their roster included free agents JD Drew, Julio Lugo, Manny and Matsuzaka. This is nothing new for the Red Sox who have been buying and selling players like cattle since their astute sale of some guy named George Herman Ruth.  Jimmy Foxx and Lefty Grove, who both had their best years as  Philadelphia Athletics, were purchased by the Red Sox in separate deals and are in the Hall of Fame wearing Red Sox hats.  Quite possibly no one ever accused the Red Sox of the 30’s of buying the Championship because, THEY NEVER WON ONE !

I will be back in a few days to try to explain to the unwashed masses out there about why fans of teams who are not competitve should be angry with their own teams and not the Yankees or Red Sox or Mets or Dodgers, or any other team that actually makes a financial commitment to their team and their city.  These fans of the Royals, Pirates, Indians, Orioles, Reds, etc are being duped and misplacing their rage.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE

MORE ON MO

How's that "gameplan" looking now.  Since game 2, when the Phillies saw so much of Mariano that they had him figured out, he threw 5 pitches in game 3 and got the final 2 outs and 8 pitches in game 4 and got the final 3 outs, including that master of the "gameplan" Jimmy Rollins, who took a called strike then popped out to first on the next pitch.

Some people never learn......

Oh and how's Brad Lidge looking ??

MAGIC NUMBER IS ONE

 Nov 1, 2009

Well the Yanks are slowly rounding into the form with which they lead all of baseball in 2009.  Solid starters, good work from the bullpen, timely hitting, a bunch of HR's, good defense and as always......Mariano.

The Phillies, however, are talking a good game in regards to beating Mo, starting with their dopey manager, good ol' Charlie, "We can hit Rivera," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel promised not long after the Yankees laid a 3-1 bruise on his team to even this World Series at one game apiece Thursday night in Yankee Stadium. "We've proved that."

The players also chirped in:

"Getting to see him that much gives you the opportunity to form a game plan against him," said Phillies slugger Ryan Howard, who fanned four times in Game 2, including taking a called third strike from Rivera to start the ninth. "Obviously, the more you see a guy, the more you get used to him. "Now you have a game plan," Phils shortstop Jimmy Rollins said. "We didn't really see Mariano this season during our time here [Rivera did throw one inning in a 4-3, 11-inning Phillies victory May 24 at Yankee Stadium]. "It was good," right fielder Jayson Werth said. "We made him work, and we had some opportunities."

Last night on Halloween, there were some strange things going on, Phil Hughes left a fastball up and then made both the ball and himself disappear.  Enter the "Sandman", with no one on and 1 out, Mo throws 5 balls, 4 for strikes and suddenly the entire crowd of Phillie fans disappears! pretty scary stuff.  So much for a "gameplan".  Perhaps the best assessment of Mo was by  Matt Stairs who after striking out to end the game Thursday night, said "you take one side of the plate or the other and hope he makes a mistake, I took in and missed the cutter".  Stairs is a career .143 hitter against Mo.

So my game 1 preview was only off by 3 innings, Lee was untouchable for 9 innings not 6.  Game 2 I underestimated Pedro, he pitched well, not good enough to win but solid, better than I thought.  Game 3 was according to plan.  Game 4 will not have Lee on 3 days rest but instead journey man Blanton who the Yankees have seen many times and CC goes for the Yanks.  It really shouldn't be a contest but stranger things have happened in the World Series, right Bill Buckner?  That leaves game 5 and the question as to who will start against Lee on full rest.  Once again, looks pretty simple to predict based on Lee's last performance.  So back to the Bronx where I hope Joe will have a rested AJ waiting for old Pedro, that would really be a great way to end the series smacking "who's your Daddy" all over the new stadium as AJ finally becomes the stud that he always showed he could be.

 SERIES PREVIEW

some team history....

Phillies suck in biblical proportions......because, as good as the Phillies have been for the last few years, (with a big assist from the gagging, choking dogs from that junkyard in Queens) and even if you throw in the dominant Mike Schmidt teams of the 70's and 80's, they have sucked at historical levels forever, in 2008 they became the first pro franchise  to lose 10,000 games,

they have MLB's 3rd lowest winning % of all time, they are so bad they're even behind the Mets %, (.471 to Metses .479).

If the Yankees, who started in 1901, went 3 years without winning a game, 0-162, 3 years in a row, they would still have more wins than the Phillies, who started in 1883.

some player history...

Derek Jeter has played in 32 World Series, the Phillie franchise has played in 25 games since 1915.

Andy Pettitte has started in 10 World Series games for the Yankees, the Phillies have won 12 games

Mariano has been in 20 World Series games with a 1.16 ERA.

Phillies have more players with 1 ring, 18 total but the Yankees have 4 players with 4, if you throw in the managers ,1 for Charlie and 3 for Joe, it's a wash.

some playoff stats....

according to Yankee hitting coach Kevin Long, ARod did not swing and miss at any pitches in the series against the Angels,

also, against Joe Saunders in game 6, the entire Yankee team swung and missed only one pitch out of 83 thrown by Saunders.

oh, but maybe that's not a big deal because after all, the Red Sox didn't swing and miss at any pitches in the ALCS.

W. S. Prediction Speed Round :

GAME 1 :

Lee goes 6 strong, then weakens as Charlie Manuel pulls a "Grady Little" and keeps him out there in the 7th too long as the Yanks wear him down and pull away.

GAME 2 :

Pedro gets pounded from the beginning as he doesn't fool the Yankee left handers at all

GAME 3 :

Hamels continues his postseason woes and struggles to get through the fifth inning.

GAME 4 :

Lee, on short rest doesn't have it as he remembers why it's so much easier pitching in the NL. Chad Gaudin gets enough innings to get to the bullpen, then Mariano as the brooms come out,

and John Sterling starts to chirp....ballgame over, WORLD SERIES OVER,   tthhee Yankeeeesss winnn,

TTTHHHEEE YYAANKKEEEESS WWWIINNNN !!!!!!

SCARY STUFF....

Imagine if you will, a large metropolis with 3 teams which are at the pinnacle of their sport on a weekend in October.....the season of all souls, all saints and "the festival of the dead", All Hallow's Eve.....dun dun den den....then visualize this....these 3 teams, giants in their sports, if you will, all enjoying the most wins of the current season, in hockey, baseball and football, suddenly and unexpectingly see this all come crashing down in a few short days........now consider, for a moment, the names of the teams who so foully soiled their seasons....den, den, den, den.......

THE DEVILS, THE ANGELS and THE SAINTS.....

strange circumstance, you say......NOT, when you realize that this large metropolis is located in a part of....dun, den, den, den.........

THE TWILIGHT ZONE.........

this is all just a bad dream or else an old TV show.....

thank you, Rod Serling,

Oct.19,2009

Man, I forgot how cool it is to still be talking baseball when the leaves are changing and all that stuff. btw, my job is never done, I'm eternally vigilant....a watchdog...neither rain, nor snow, nor the bulldip coming from other fans, blah, blah, .you get the idea, I'm here to root for my teams and terrorize all the others.

Sorry the Boston fans are on the sideline, I gotta cut this short to go watch the Yankees....little trivia..no one has hit more than 3 hrs to either tie or go in the lead in playoff history....ARod tied the record in the last 5 games.

later

Oct.12, 2009

Well, I guess my job here  is done.....

Best team in baseball...NY Yankees

Best team in football....NY Giants

I think I need something to lie down on and rest a little.....wait are those some laurels ?

I'll be back in a little while just to torture those 1 or 2 Boston fans that are still reading about sports and not counting the minutes before the overrated Celtics start their season.

WHO DO WE LIKE ?

Hmmmmmm....well,

"The Yankees led the big leagues in runs scored, home runs, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, extra-base hits and walks.
They had the best team ERA, the best second-half ERA and the lowest opponent OPS of all the AL postseason pitching staffs.
They have a closer (Mr. Mariano Rivera, ladies and gentlemen) with a 0.77 postseason ERA.

They have set up man Phil Hughes who gave up four runs in 23 innings during August and September. His bullpen ERA is 1.40 in 51 1/3 innings.
They're riding the best clubhouse vibe, the best grade in chemistry class, of any Yankees team in maybe a decade.
They put runs on the board at home (5.7 runs per game). They put runs on the board away from home (5.6 per game).
 They hit left-handers (.286 AVG./.365 OBP/.480 SLUG). They hit right-handers (.282/.360/.476).
They can bludgeon you early (.828 OPS in the first inning). They can mug you late (15 walkoff wins -- second-most in franchise history).
They win at home (57-24). They win on the road (46-35).
They crush the bad teams (29-12 against the Orioles, A's, Royals and Indians).   They beat up the good teams (27-17 against the Angels, Red Sox, Tigers, Twins and Phillies).
They even won a series in Anaheim -- for the first time in five years. And they went 9-1 in their last three series against the Red Sox".

with thanks to Jayson Stark, ESPN.com

whatcha think ?  starts tonight, magic number is 11 and counting

Rio Gets the Olympics..

What was Obama thinking?  In this economy, the last thing he should want is to put an extra financial burden on the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois.  London is holding the 2012 Olympics and there are big cost overruns and budget deficits. From the Financial Times, "Four of the 12 companies that signed up with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to become worldwide sponsorship partners for the four-year period that ended with Beijing 2008 have since ended the relationship."  I can't imagine the shape NYC would be in right now if they got that award.

My own thought as to why Rio got the award and Chicago didn't might have to do with the fact that the IOC board is full of dirty old men and we sent Oprah to compete against the city that invented the "thong".  Oh, and where was that man of the people, the guy with the statue in Chicago, Olympic hero Michael Jordan?

NEWS ITEM.....Combined wire services......10/4/09

Mets Season-Ending Weekend Presents Dilemma for Feds.....

The US Marshall Service is looking into options for it's famed "witness protection program".  "Now where are we going to put them?" lamented US Marshall George "The Stork" Theodore.  Apparently the program has been using the left field stands at Citifield to keep its newest members under the fed's protection.  "It was perfect" said Theodore, "plenty of room, privacy in the bathrooms, no lines for food, no one ever bothered us.  Of course the opposing team sometimes would hit one into our section but we just threw tme ball back."
According to unnamed sources, the government was never charged for tickets, this was in exchange for the Wilpons being moved up the list when Bernie Madoff's loot is divided up among his victims.  Currently the witness protection program is looking into spending the winter going to Islander games.  Off the record, an official remarked that the coliseum would work as well as Citifield because "there's also always a lot of dumb-looking guys wandering around so we blend in nicely".  The only drawbacks according to the source were, "....lousy food, the bathrooms are always a mess and the Islanders really  suck".

Oct. 3, 2009

Well, the Red Sox finally won a freakin' game.  Against Cleveland, wow, the Indians not only haven't played hard in the last month, they threw their cards in early this year giving away Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez, even Carl Pavano, who pitched decently, was traded for a couple of young, cheaper bodies.  Any incentive the players left on the team had, was lost when they canned their manager IN THE LAST WEEK of the season.  Does it surprise anyone this town hired Mangina to coach the Brownies....BUT I digress....let's get back to the Red Sox sneaking in the back door of the playoffs and then continuing to lose.  They ain't turning it around this year.
The Yankees meanwhile have discovered, speaking of Cleveland, that Joba still has bugs all over him when he pitches, or at least he thinks he does.  My suggestion is to delouse him during the first round and have him ready for the Angels.  Other than poor Jobaman, the Yanks are locked 'n loaded and ready to go, they are looking real good.  We have time to discuss baseball, let's get to the NFL....

The J E S T will have a tough time in the "Big Easy", while they are definitely a playoff team, unfortunately, so are the Saints, with 2 defensive backfield starters out, the Jest will be especially vulnerable to Drew Brees.

Well at least one team will get that "undefeated monkey " off their back.  The Giants will probably have until they face the Saints in 2 weeks, then and only then will we have a true measuring  stick to compare the 2 Jersey teams.
The big question regarding the Giants is can they get back to back shutouts?

The Pats will also have their hands full with the Bal'more Ravens, who, in my humble opinion, are overrated, having played just one legitimate team.  Everyone's raving about the Ravens, "they finally have an offense to go along with their defense!"......err I don't think so, I mean their offense is OK, they scored against the Browns and Chiefs pretty easily but the main point is that their defense isn't what it once was.  They lost their D coordinator and three of their better starters are now wearing ugly green uniforms.  Ray Lewis isn't getting any younger, I mean, it must be 5 or 6 years since he killed anyone.   Last year the Giants ran all over and through them, including tough guy Ray-Ray.  They are a good team but good usually isn't enough to win in New England.  The Pats' defense will shine and Brady will stay standing long enough to throw crossing routes to Welker and a bomb to Moss.   Pats in a close one.

Enjoy Sunday everyone !

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

and a shoutout to our good friend Russell Bucky F'n Dent !!!!!! Thanks for the memories.....31 years ago today....

MAGIC NUMBER IS NOW 11

Sept 25, 2009

Tonight's game was very important to the Yanks playoff chances, Joba has to be Joba for the Yanks to get back to where they belong, no more pretenders, no more National League teams, no more one and dones, no more wild card teams. World Series Champs are supposed to be complete deals that people remember, like the 1975-6 Reds, the '64 Cards, '84 Tigers, the '98 Yanks, classic dominate teams.

I think it is time to take a closer look at the wildcard and create more of an obstacle for them to proceed in the playoffs.  Maybe make them play all road games, or have 2 wildcards with a one game playoff immediately after the season, make them use their pitching, make winning the division really mean something.

Of course, Boston is downplaying winning the division, now that they are getting their asses whipped and have no shot at it, which is probably why Captain Underpants let all those Yankees steal 7 bases.  The magic number is 3 and with CC going tomorrow and Bye Bye Birdie on Sunday, I'm chilling some bubbly.

Speaking of Sunday, I hate to break the news to the J E T S fans but the football season lasts more than 2 weeks.  Tennessee will come in a desperate team who will not go 0-3.  The Jets will have a good season and the key for those crazy Jet fans is to stop getting too low or too high, they will be there for the playoffs, but not undefeated, starting with their first lose on Sunday.

As for the losing team last week, the Pats are in trouble, their offensive line is old as is their key running back, a Jaguar reject, Fred Taylor.  The defense is missing maybe half of their roster from a couple of years ago.  They face a tough test with Atlanta and I think they lose a close  one. Brady has yet to find any rhythm and looks like it will take a few more games.

The Giants are still getting their act together, meanwhile they are 2-0 in division and made what would be a great Master Card commercial last Sunday night....

"Cost of Dallas roster..... millions;

cost of new Dallas stadium... a billion and a half;

Jerry Jones net worth... billions;

look on Jones' face after Tynes nails it, a second time .....PRICELESS."

The Eagles are a mess, can't wait until Michael Vick comes in for a "pooch kick"as they continue to struggle.

Enjoy Sunday and hope you have more than one TV, thanks Schlmo.

Sept 18,2009

Looks like we just can't get away from the Boston-NY rivalry, the Red Sox keep coming on and suddenly their starters are looking wicked awesome and the Yankee starters...well, not so much.  It is looking like the second round of the playoffs will be the way we wrote it up, but we have time for that.

This weekend, this early in the season, the NY football teams both have important, season defining games.

In the first game, the new guys, the J E T S actually will walk on that field with a sense that they belong on the same field with arguably the best team of the decade.  Rex Ryan, who looks about a double-cheeseburger away from exploding, has done a great job of instilling confidence in the Jets, especially the defense which ran out of steam last year but have added a nice sprinkling of ex Ravens with that killer attitude.  Under the center is the best young QB for the Jets since Joe Willy and he has some weapons to spread the ball around with.  However, it is far too early for Rhodes to start chirping about "embarrassing the Patriots", please, you beat the Texans for gawdsakes, the Texans, who have never had a winning season.  Those third down tosses by Sanchez won't be quite so easy against a championship team.  Just look what the Pats did against the Bills.  They know how to win, the Jets have to learn that.  Of course the Bills did help the Pats by having that dope come running out of the endzone on the last kickoff faster than a Davidow when the check comes.

I think the Jets keep it close but Belichick confuses Sanchez enough for some easy turnovers and the Pats win and no one is embarrassed except Rhodes.

Now, onto Sunday night and the game of the week.  Dallas beat up a very bad Tampa team but allowed Tampa to run all over them.  They can't do that against the Giants. NY's offensive line gets it together as Jacobs and Bradshaw pound them.  Also the Giant wide outs will show that it's actually good that they're not Toomer or Plax because they are younger and faster as Eli goes deep a few times when Dallas tightens up against the run. NY's D keeps Romo moving and except for a few broken plays they stiffle Dallas as Corey Webster continues to show that he's a pro bowl type corner. Last year he broke up 35% of the passes thrown at him, which was the NFL's best %.

Giants spoil the grand opening as they win by double figures.

Oh, one last note on the Philadelphia Eagles, nice win last week against the Panthers, as Jake Delhomme did an imitation of Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen in honor of the former NFL great from North Carolina. Unfortunately for Jake, Sonny is 75 years old and blind in one eye, as Jake proceded to throw 4 interceptions and lose a couple of fumbles as the Eagles had their way.  This week, however, they play against the modern version of Sonny in Drew Brees as the Saints march all over them.

Eagle defense gets exposed as the Saints dominate a McNabbless Philly team.

Sept.12, 2009

Well unless the Yanks get AJ, Joba and now Pettitte right, not only are they in trouble in the playoffs but that series with the Red Sox in 2 weeks can actually mean something.

NFL opening day, Let's get right to it.....Giants - Charger Superbowl this year, Pats have lost too much leadership on defense, the Eagles are probably the most over-rated team we have seen since, since well since last year's Cowboys and the Cowboys, the year before and the year before that or go further back when everyone drank the Raiders Kool-aid every year.

The Eagles have a rebuilt offensive line, a defense which as SI putit, "the loss of the top three defensive leaders from last season, safety Brain Dawkins,(free agent loss) middle linebacker Stewart Bradley (torn ACL out for season) and Jim Johnson "D" coordinator (died of cancer)", receivers who are not anymore experienced that the NY Giants receivers, a running back, Brian Westbrook, who gets hurt more than Jacobs and a QB who is inconsistent to the point that he was benched last year.  They lose their first game against Carolina and watch everyone jump off their bandwagon.

The Giants are solid and the Jets are up and coming.

The AFL East looks like the Pats in first with the best QB in football and the Fish and Jets fight for second with the only truely NY team, Buffalo looking like a typical upstater, dazed and confused, with TO complaining to whoever is left to coach the offense after they fire the O coordinator with 2 weeks to go.

The NFL East looks like the Giants in first and a 3 way scramble for second.

More on that later...enjoy the games.

HOT OFF THE WIRES......

August 28, 2009  CHICAGO — The Mets for the first time on Friday acknowledged that Jose Reyes may need surgery to repair the torn right hamstring tendon that has sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Reyes, on the disabled list since May 21, has spent the last three weeks in New York receiving physical therapy.

and in a related story....

Sep 2nd, 2009  CHICAGO -- Aaron Boone ran to his position at first base and that's when it really hit him. He was back, playing in a major league game for the first time since undergoing open heart surgery in late March.

good thing it wasn't Reyes' heart that was causing him trouble...they'd still be looking for it

 From David Letterman:

"Congratulations to the United States Little League team. They defeated Taiwan 6-3 to win the Little League World Series. The winning pitcher is now dating Kate Hudson."

SEPT 4, 2009

Well, last night was the last pre-season game for the Jets, Pats and Giants and the J E T S did look the best of the lot however, don't they always perform when it doesn't matter? They do have a good young QB, solid running and swarming D with excellent d-backs, BUT they are the Jets.  In New England Coach Belicheck kept his tradition alive of letting the Foxsboro ushers and parking attendents suit up for the last preseason game and the Giants receivers finally caught some balls. Eli looked good for the 7 minutes he played, here's a little insight to the mediocre preseason the G-men have had...this is a team is built on wearing down the opposition in the second half, bruising runners and a relentless pass rush, so the preseason doesn't tell us much,

I'll be back with some thoughts and predictions about the upcoming season

Now back to our regularly scheduled Yankee rant.....how's this for an offense?  7 guys with 20 or more HR's and over 70 RBI's each AND  Derek Jeter !  I could bat last in that lineup, however the Yanks have yet another switch hitter batting last, to go along with their other 3 switch hitters.

Sox keep winning but so do the Yanks, it's looking more and more like a second round showdown again...Magic number is 22

ENJOY THE PICNIC EVERYONE....SEE YOU THERE

SEPT 3,2009

Yanks continue to roll, up 7 1/2 with 29 to go, ARod 4 RBI's, Jeter closes on the Iron Horse's Yankee record for total hits, CyCy pitches another gem, and the O's roll over like Paris Hilton on a second date, same old, same old...     Magic # is 23

Old washed up Red Sox pitchers continue to pop up in races.......John Smoltz throws 5 scoreless innings for Cards after being fired by Boston, Penny then tops that by going 8 scoreless for the Giants after being fired.

Meanwhile, back in Beantown, yet another old Boston pitcher in a race:

"Schilling, a registered independent and longtime Republican supporter, wrote on his blog that while his family and video game company, 38 Studios, are high priorities, 'I do have some interest in the possibility.'" (of running for Ted Kennedy's vacant seat). Gee, wonder if he'll mention 2004 at all?

AUGUST 29, 2009

THIS JUST IN....The Yankees have too much pitching...Mitre and Gaudin combined for a 1 hit shut-out, they have the best bullpen in baseball...Hughes and Mariano are untouchable.

Hmmm, sound familar, oh  yeah they were saying it about the Red Sox in May, gee that's a long time ago...looong time ago.

MAGIC NUMBER = 28

Jeter gets 3 hits again, as the Yankees take 17 out of 20 of the last series, on the way to the playoffs.  The Yanks finally climb out of the long hot desert of 1 year out of the playoffs.

CAREER ENDERS....In the last 2 weeks the Yankees have gotten 3 major league pitchers fired, John Smoltz, Brad Penny and Jason Jennings of Texas, all released after the Yankees smacked 'em around, of course as Smoltzie proved, there's always the National League.

So remember, it's all in the numbers, 28 Yankee wins or Boston defeats begins the conversation about the number 27 as in 27 World Championships.

AUGUST 20, 2009

Well, even I have to give the sox credit, they have hung around and kept pace with the mighty Yankees, through the Youseless 5 game ban and little Pedroia having an even littler Pedroia and missing a couple of games.  Which makes the showdown this weekend even more important.  They sweep the Yanks and suddenly the race is on again, get swept and all eyes are on Texas.  This weekend will be fun.

A TALE OF TWO CAPTAINS:

Capt Varitek....is having an historical year statistically, besides his usual stellar batting stats, hitting .223 with an OBP of .332, he is going into the record book with the highest percentage of allowing stolen bases, 91.1% or 92 out of 101, with two 8 stolen base games.  This is the highest percentage since they began keeping the stat in 1974.

Capt. Jeter....has the most hits by a shortstop in the history of the game, on his way to 3000 hits, he should be considered the greatest modern day shortstop.  Only Honus Wagner of the pre-modern day era is better, period.

AUGUST 17, 2009

WOW, this weekend I was doing some "due diligence" research as a intrepid reporter and such, by surfing through the Boston papers looking for interestiong takes on the Red Sox, man, you would think it was early November. All Pats all the time, very little mention of the currently stinkin' Red Sox.  I guess the local papers realize that Boston is such a town of front-runners that no one wants to read about losers. I mean, just 2 months ago when the Sox swept the Yanks, it was front page news.  My, how the mighty have fallen.  Following this theory, I imagine very few Boston beanbags are reading my insightful scribblings right now.  Too bad, just don't let the door hit ya on the way out......

About the Amazins, I have never seen such bad luck with injuries and I feel bad for my Met fan buddies.  I think they should just pull the plug get rid of Sheff and trade anyone else who can't help next year and bring up a bunch of kids, and have some fun...as they used to say in Brooklyn to dem bums, "wait 'til next year"....so which is worse? being out of it in August of choking in the last week?

*Number of the weekend.....2675...amount of hits the Captain, Derek Jeter has as a shortstop, the most in MLB history, pretty impressive.

**Second number of the weekend....37...no, not my number but thanks for remembering... 37 is the Yanks "MAGIC NUMBER"

***Third number of the weekend....1/2...as in 1/2 game out of the wildcard, out of the playoffs, out of the sports pages in Boston...

AUGUST 15, 2009

NFL News.....Meadowlands NJ....Sanchez completes first pass !!! Start printing the Super Bowl tickets !!! Oh wait, hold it up a minute, the Jets lost the game,

same old J E T S

AUGUST 14, 2009

NEWS ITEM......The Boston Red Sox acquire SS Alex Gonzales. Theo is a freakin' genius, he just traded for a guy who was released by one of the worst teams in the NL and was batting .210. I believe this is number 20 in the never-ending quest to fill Nomar's shoes, the guess here is he'll hardly fill Nick Green's shoes.  Let's see, Lugo's batting .356 for St Louis in 16 games and Adam LaRoche is hitting .371 for Atlanta in 10 games.  Meanwhile back in Boston, they're starting to look like a national league team with designated outs at the bottom of the lineup.  Add AGon to Captain Underpants and David, but I thought it was a diet pill, Ortiz and you have 3 guys looking stupid every at bat.

**** 6 1/2 and climbing after the heat in Texas, that 1/2 game wildcard lead is going to melt away down there

RUMOR CENTRAL....a certain former world leader who lives in nearby Crawford is bored and looking to get back with his old team, the Rangers.  Supposedly, he wants to hire his old friend Michael, "Hell of a job Brownie!" as the new GM.   I guess the first thing he should do is get Theo's phone number.

AUGUST 12, 2009

Hey everyone, sorry but I've been out of town last few days. whatz up ?? I mean, I know the Mets lost but I don't need a paper or internet to know that.

Anyone see any baseball games over the weekend ? I was wondering who won....no, not really but I was out of town but thanks to the wonder of my son's Iphone we were able to listen to John and Susan even on the darkest roads in the Midwest. It was reassuring hearing from familiar voices in a strange land....something about hearing "AN A-BOMB FROM AROD !!!" a few times just warms your heart, throw in a little.."BACK TO BACK AND BELLY TO BELLY" and it seems like home...not to mention one I never get tired off..."TTHHHAAAAA YAAANNNKKKEEESSS WIINNN!!!! TTHHHAAAA YYAAANNNNKKEEES WINN!!" (heard that 4 times).

So the question is, do I just jump right in to my NFL preview, now that we have baseball closure or should I rehash some of last weekend, even thought it will probably piss off Boston fans.....well, what do you think? So, about last weekend, some stats and interesting points by yours truly.....

Red Sox' weekend batting average with runners in scoring postion....079,

Smoltz pitched to 11 left-handed hitters, gave up 9 hits,

Yanks only swung and missed 2 of Smoltzes pitches,

until Victor Victoria's HR they didn't have an extra basehit,

31 scoreless innings in a row

etc, etc,

Do you realize if Carl Crawford hadn't stolen Varitek's car, he would have been asked to drive Smoltz to Pawtucket. They could have discussed their career moves, Smoltz back to Atlanta to work on radio and Varitek to NESN. Rumor has it Varitek already has experience working under some of the female sportscasters at NESN.

Julio is batting .360 in 50 ab's for the Cardinals, nice move Theo, Woodward is now the 19th shortstop since Nomar.

******* 5 1/2 games after Youseless charges mound and attacks Detroit's pitcher to get them both thrown out. So, it's come down to this, if you can't hit 'em...hit 'em. This after Sunday's game when Boston was intentionally throwing at ARod to incite CC to retaliate and get himself thrown out. Get a better gameplan Tito boy. Classless stuff.

btw...check out Youseless flinging his helmet at the Detroit pitcher on the replays, he looked like he was swinging his purse at him, I'm surprised he didn't scratch him.....what a sissyboy

AUGUST 6,2009

Well. it's finally here, the big showdown, rumble in da bronx, mano a mano, first against second, good guys against bad guys, and the reason for this blog.  First place NY versus the second place Boston Beantowners.

Taking a look at the pitching matchups, the first game looks like a mismatch.  Joba is on the best roll of his career 3-0, 0.83 ERA since the All-Star break, while Smoltzie looks like he should have stayed home.  The only thing interesting about his starts is the imaginative ways which Francona tries put a positive spin on every performance.  I mean, how many times can he say, "we were very encouraged", "we're excited and expect big things" "he's going to be...."

Hey Tito, who are you kidding?  He sucks!! Anyone else with his stats would be learning the names of the bartenders in the Pawtucket Applebees.by now.

All of this makes this first game the most important one for both clubs. For the Yankees, they have to prove to the Sox and to themselves that they can beat them.  For the Red Sox, they win and they are up 9-0 with Beckett taking the mound the next night, probably in first place.

The Yanks will have AJ Burnett against Beckett, then CC against Baby Buchholz and Pettitte will face "he who is to be named"  If Joba can deal and Smoltz Moltz, the Yanks may get on another roll and kick the Sox when they're down.

You have to believe Boston will not go 18-0 against the Yanks. Not with only 2 proven starters, the bottom half of their lineuop hitting about .250 and a tired bullpen coming off an extra inning game last night and Bad Penny pitching tonight.

So I'm looking at 3 out of 4 for the Yanks...what do you think ?

NO RUMORS HERE

From Dan Shaughnessy, today's Boston Globe....

"David Ortiz lied to you. It seems safe to say that his entire Red Sox career is a lie."

"Ortiz was an average player when the Sox picked him up before the 2003 season. He’d been a big strikeout guy with the Twins. He could hit an occasional homer, but had a big hole in his swing. He started the 2003 season on the bench, playing behind Jeremy Giambi....He was ordinary before 2003. Then he cheated. Then he was great. Now there is testing and he is less than ordinary."

No rumors, no lies, FACTS.... released by the Minnesota Twins as a 27-year-old underachieving slugger with 58 career home runs in 455 career games...suddenly finds his swing, his "mojo" in Boston?? Pleeaaasse...the next 4 years 31,41,47 and 54 HR's, the last one pushing the great Jimmy Foxx off the record page.  He also averaged 141 rbi's a year, over 100 better than his 6 year average in Minny, sure the Red Sox were a better team than the Twins, but not 100 RBI's a year better...Big Popi is now nothing more than a pile of big poop, he stinks !!

How's it feel Redsoxnation? You still gonna yell out AROID ?  Manny is on the left coast but Ortiz is your problem now.  So far the fans seem to be taking it well, yesterday at Fenway, only hours after the news hit, they gave Popi a curtain call.  So who am I kidding, of course they're still going to chant AROID and boo Jeter (who now, more than ever, is the face of baseball the way it is supposed to be) and cheer for Big Popi looking through their Redsox tinted glasses at their version of "reality".  This "reality" which sees only... Redsox = good..Yankees = bad, this same "reality" which forces them to chant "Yankees suck" at Patriot games, backyard BBQ's and First Communions.

I guess they have a different kind of curse now, I honestly don't know whether to feel bad for them or laugh at them......naaah, I do know,  I'll laugh at them.  I'll laugh at them for being such provincial little homers living in a dream world full of lies and lying liars.

AH HA HA HA, "Big Popi's the greatest", HA HA HA  "He didn't cheat" HA HA HA "ARod's much worse" HA HA HA "what about Clemens?" HA HA HA....STOP YOU'RE KILLING ME, HA HA HA

-----TED WILLIAMS HEAD EXPLODES IN DESERT !!!!!----------

Ortiz and Ramirez Said to Be on 2003 Doping List

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, the sluggers who propelled the

Boston Red Sox to end an 86-year World Series championship

drought and to capture another title three years later, were

among the roughly 100 Major League Baseball players to test

positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, according

to lawyers with knowledge of the results.

 JULY 30,2009

We don't need no stinkin' Halladay !!!!!

JOBA RULES !!!!

Last night was his most impressive performance of the season as the right-hander dominated one of the better offensive teams in the league. Chamberlain threw 65 of his 101 pitches for strikes and first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 28 batters he faced.  The eight innings matched his career high.  Since the All-Star break he is 3-0 with an 0.83 ERA, he has allowed only 8 hits in his last 21 2/3 innings with 19 K's.  Add to that Phil Hughes scoreless streak of 23 1/3 innings in relief and the Yanks future is suddenly very bright, Hughes is 22 and Joba 23.

No wonder they have the best record in baseball at 62-39, 3 1/2 in front of Boston, 7 1/2 in front of Tampa.  Makes my job of being funny real easy, all Yankee fans have to do is look at the standings and have a good laugh.....a wicked awesome laugh.....HA HA HA

btw Mets lost again

TRIVIA......this is for all you Buchholz fans out there, feel free to use it to impress your friends...In 1953, Bobo Holloman threw a no-hitter in his first major league start for the St Louis Browns, guess what his lifetime record was?

3-7.....hey check out the last names....8 letters, a double letter in each, spooky, heh, oh but don't worry, he's going to be the next Smoltz err Lester.

JULY 26,2009

Hope everyone had a nice weekend, enjoyed all the heartattack specials that Jeremy and friends whipped together for everyone on Black Mt.

Now for the update, a little good news, and a little bad news for ya,

naah just kiddin'....it's all bad news for Boston and all good news for the Yanks

The Yanks just finished the opening homestand of the second half by going 9-1. Their bullpen is the best in baseball, Hughes has 23 scoreless innings in a row and Mo is Mo. The offense is relentless and their "d" set a record for the most errorless games in a row this year.

Boston has hit a wall right now, 3-6 since the break, their offense sucks and Smoltz is a joke.

But wait.... "we just got La Roche !!"...but you wait, he's batting .247, "but,historically, he's a great second half player", sure playing with the Pirates! I'll put my money on ARod, who's batting .248, having a better second half than that stiff.

Oh, the Mets just lost again, added Sheff to the DL and that "greatest pitcher in the world" guy gave up a jack to the opposing pitcher.

Philly seems to be tracking in on the current "best pitcher" and St Louis made some nice additions, so, just me saying, but the NL looks to be LA, St Louie and Philly fighting for the right to lose to the Yankees.

 July 22th,2009

Some pertinent stats regarding the first place NY Yankees....

since A Rod's return on May 8th they have the best record in baseball, 43-22, .660%,

since the all-star break, they also have the best record in baseball, 5-0,  1.000%.

Just a couple of quotes to mark the day,

First from Mariano Duncan of the 1996 World Champion Yankees:

"We play today, we win today....that's eet"

For you Boston fans, a classic from Satchel Page:

"Don't look back, someone may be gaining on you."

And for you Met fans out there, from the immortal Dean Wormer:

"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life"

July 20th, 2009

OK, by popular demand...here are the second half MLB previews.....

National League

East:

Phillies…..team to beat, defending Champs, Rollins will have better second half…could use a starter, if they empty out their minor leagues and go after Roy Halladay, you can, as Dandy Don used to sing on Monday Night Football….”turn out the lights, the party’s over”.  They would then be worthy of being in the AL East.  Won something like 10 in a row.  Only team to be happy they won’t have home field advantage in W.S., awesome road record.

Marlins, Braves….they are both decent teams, will stay within shooting range of the Phillies as long as Halladay stays in the AL, but will fade as experience wins out, both outside shots for wildcard.

Mets...... as long as the Mets are without their All-Stars and Omar continues to watch the season go down the drain, they will be as competitive as the Nats, however if they suddenly get healthy, they will make it interesting before they choke in September.

Nationals…see Cincy

Central:

Cards….Pujois is a beast, he can carry this basically mediocre team to the playoffs

Brewers…talented young team, if they get some pitching got real shot at wild card

Astros…hot right now but who cares

Cubs…eternal lovable losers, fans don’t care as long as the beer’s cold, love Lou but they seem to self destruct, also wild card possibles, more likely pretenders

Cincy.... see Pirates

Pirates.....see Rockies

West:

Dodgers….gee, that Torre guy is great, NO, actually he’s not, his hypercritical book where he throws Yankees under the bus for a few bucks tells you all you need to know, his success with the Yankees was based on a talented self motivated team, a bullpen even he couldn’t ruin and Don Zimmer sitting next to him, I mean….how did he not bunt on Schilling in 2004?  why did he play the infield in with Mo on the mound in 2001?   how do you use Weaver out of the bullpen in the 2003 W S?  what’s up with not pulling the team off the field when Joba gets attacked by the bugs in 2007?  Never mind Joe, just sit there and drink your goddamn green tea!!!!  AAAGGRRRHHH!!!!!!!.....sorry….. where was I ?  Oh yeah, the Dodgers, good young team, lots of arms, good record in bad division, 1 and out in playoffs

Giants….great young pitching , lousy lineup, they got a Molina batting cleanup. Imagine this starting rotation if Zito was any good…no shot at wild card

Rockies.....see DBacks

DBacks.....see Padres

Padres.....they suck….they all suck..... no wonder the NL loses every all-star game and doesn’t compete in interleague play.

American League

East:

Boston…they’re great, best team evaa, wicked awesome good !!!!!!!!  except for the fact, they’re 8-0 vs Yanks and have only played against 1 pitcher who made the AL all-stars (Edwin Hernandez who had a no decision as the Mariners won, you could look it up !).  Update they finally played Halladay..and lost to him.  With all this going for them, they are tied for first. They let the Yankees hang around and that will cost them.  One little stat, sorry, just can’t help myself, Capt. Discount has a lifetime batting average in September of .229, pretty clutch for a tough guy that starts fights with his mask and equipment on.

Yankees….well, you know how I feel, they’re just getting started….. 28 come from behind wins..8 walk-offs, Joba getting into form, Hughes lights out in the eight…. I’ll do a team to team matchup later this year.  Most guys on team have better career second half stats.

Rays….what is all the fuss about a team that was the worst in baseball for the last 10 years which suddenly finds themselves with a bunch of exceptional athletes, if you get the number overall pick 10 years in a row, you’re bound to find some stars….blind squirrel and all that.  Even so, they snuck up on everyone last year and although they are very talented, they, like Baltimore and Toronto are in the wrong division.

BlueJays…might as well dump Halladay for a bunch of young studs, being the best fourth place team in baseball doesn’t get you very much

O’s….they seem to finally be on the right track, best young outfield in baseball, Brian Roberts, some decent young arms, now they just have to get rid of D’Angelos and replace him with Cal Ripken.

Central:

Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota…..all good teams, but basically on Toronto’s level

Cleveland….decent team, good fans, lousy year, no shot at wild card

KC….as it once was for the Yankees in the fifties and sixties, a good farm team for developing major leaguers

West:

Los Angeles, Anaheim, California, etc…good solid team great manager, play fundamental, aggressive baseball….please God let Boston play them in the first round.

Texas…good hitting team but they always were, going back to Juan gone and IRod, still need pitching although they have improved, no wild card, it belongs to the East.

Seattle …nice team, missing too many parts

Oakland…when is anyone going to say how over-rated Billy Bean and his “Moneyball” stat driven baseball is?  He has never even been to the W.S.

Finally, Red Sox vs Yanks to be Master of the Universe and the right to smack around the NL Champs.

and really if Joba remembers how to be Joba and with Hughes coming out of the pen.......come on, be real, the Yanks win their 27th in a walk.  You can look it up, the Yankees always start the centuries slowly, then dominate.

July 20th, 2009

utt ohhh.......looks who's in first place.......no not the Phillies, we knew that.......here come the Yankees...Smotz may go on injured reserve with a tweak in his neck from watching the balls fly out.....just sayin'

July, 18th, 2009

HAPPY 10th ANNIVERSARY

10 years ago today David Cone pitched a perfect game for the Yankees against the Expos.  He became the 5th pitcher who has thrown a no-hitter for another team since leaving the Mets........do you know the others?

oh and just a note.....the Metses are still looking for someone to throw a no hitter in their uniform.

NEWS ITEM...........July 16th, 2009

The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they have signed Pedro Martinez (who immediately went on the 15 day disabled list...whatz dat about?) to go along with Jamie Moyers as the veterans of their pitching staff, more like WW II veterans.  They have now matched the Red Sox with having 2 of the oldest pitchers in history on the same staff.  Both teams, Boston with Tim Wakefield and John Smoltz and Philly with Moyers and Martinez now have 2 pitchers on each team with a total of over 85 years on this earth.  MLB is now dreaming of the marketing potential if these two teams meet in the World Series, which is very possible being as they are the last 2 Champs.  With a void caused by the problems in Detroit with the auto industry and General Motors dropping "like a rock", baseball has a big need for a new source of advertising income.  One possibility would be the pharmaceutical industry, picture it.....a cold October night, one of those old bastards on the mound, having a little trouble finding the plate, couple of walks, some full counts, maybe he shouldn't have had that gatorade.....suddenly Smoltz has to pee like Mine That Bird....."time out"....this commercial break is brought to you by the folks at Flomax....as Ol' Smoltzie charges off the mound holding himself......or maybe this scenario...Jamie Moyers on the mound, same circumstance, too cold, too much gatorade....perfect time for Kimberly Clark to hit the market with the male version of Depends...as the camera moves in for a closeup of Moyers, people at home see a strange, yet contented smile on Moyers face while he spends an indeterminable amount of time looking in for a sign, all the while a Depends logo slides across the bottom of the screen......ahhh, talk about the pause that refreshes.........

May-June - 2009

Phil Hughes arrives in pen; Veras and Ramirez depart

I will return with some comments on some other teams in the league, it won't be all Yankee-RedSox all the time, it will just seem like that.  So after some token remarks about the NY B team and the defending World Champs from the mediocre NL, I will discuss the upcoming second half and why right will win out and why the number 27 will be significant.....this just in...Michael Jackson is still dead......

June 28, 2009 Mo Rivera gets his 500th save putting him second all-time

June 28, 2009  Mo Rivera gets his first RBI, putting him 11 behind Alex Cora for the season.

Walkoff whiff win against the Mess when Luis..."I got it, I got it..

..I ain't got it"..Castillo   DROPS THE BALL !!

May 15,16,17 Yank's "walk off weekend" against the Twins, 3 straight pies in the face

May 15, 2009 Brett Gardner's inside the park HR

May 8, 2009  ARod's first game back,first pitch, first at bat,HR

June 30th, 2009, at Baltimore, with a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the

seventh, Boston lets Baltimore score 10 runs on 13 hits in the 7th and

8th innings to win 11-10, so much for the "exceptional" bullpen.

May 14, 2009 Aa personal hat trick....That afternoon against the Angels, Big Poopie

goes 0 for 7, leaves 12 men on base, striking out 3 times, as the Red Sox lose

to Anaheim, then the Bruins lose game 7 in Boston and also that night, the

Celtics blow a chance to eliminate the Magic and we all know how that turned

out.

Well, it's half past the season already, some things to note.....

Boston's in first, again, AL wins all-star game...again.

Same old, same old..or is it? Let's take a closer look.......

Boston is in first by 3 games over the Yankees, some highlights from the first half out of Beantown:

Sox go 8-0 against the Yanks, some close games, some not so close.

Boston has streak of over 500 sold out games. Defense and bullpen are

exceptional, starting pitching throws some gems, blah, blah, blah...

Some high points for the Yanks so far:

Lead the league both in walk off wins and comebacks after the 6th inning

Lead the AL in every offensive category except "nosehairs"

(see Bob Uecker,"Major League")

The Real Redsawks Highlights:

May 3rd, 2009 Jason Veritek, walking into the player's parking lot outside

Fenway after a tough lose to Tampa discovers his car stolen, witnesses

say someone in a Tampa Bay uniform was seen driving away......one

possible suspect, Carl Crawford, who tied a major league record earlier

that night by stealing 6 bases against "The Captain".  Veritek was a

"free-agent" last year, he was looking for $10 mil, he signed for $5mil with

the only team who gave him an offer, so call him "Capt. Discount"

....and just a note from the all-star game, that man again, Carl Crawford,

owes some thanks to Papelbum for serving up a fat one to some guy in the witness

protection program in Colorado that Crawford was able to pull back into the

park and win the MVP award.

..
